Breastfeeding Tips

There’s no better food source for baby than mother’s milk. Not only does it provide invaluable nutrients, it also helps you create a deep bond with your little one. It’s a special time between just the two of you, communicating and sharing secrets that you will hold onto forever. Here we give you some tips to help improve your breastfeeding experience.

  1. No stress

At the beginning, breastfeeding may feel uncomfortable and painful. That is nothing to worry about. Remember that all moms are nervous about those first moments with their baby, fearful they will do it wrong, unsure about how to breastfeed and even how to handle their baby. That’s why the first thing to do is relax. When you breastfeed your baby you are passing on your feelings. And breastfeeding is a natural process, like your baby learning to sleep, so trust that with practice you will find success.

  2. Good posture is critical

Posture is directly related to the production of milk and how your baby breastfeeds. Make sure you are both comfortable, with baby’s mouth at your nipple. Be careful that their neck isn’t turned or twisted. Baby’s sucking movement should have a rhythm to it. If you hear clicks or see them making faces, it’s a sign of discomfort. In that case, take them away from the breast and start over from the beginning. Gently hold your breast without pressing it, to avoid stopping the flow of milk.

  3. Your baby’s in charge

Some moms worry that their baby is drinking too much milk, or too little. But don’t worry, your baby knows what they’re doing! If they are hungry, they’ll let you know, and on the other hand, they’ll communicate when they’re full. Listen to their voice, watch for signs on their face, and do what your baby asks of you. Your baby will even take themself away from your breast and let you know when feeding time is over or vocalize to you when it’s time to eat.

  4. No bottles or pacifiers

This one is important, so we’ll repeat it–your milk is the best food for your baby! There’s no need to prepare bottles or mix in other foods. It’s also best to avoid using pacifiers as that can lead to misshaped teeth and cause nipple confusion.

  5. Good sleep and meals for you, too

When baby drinks your milk, they get all the nutrients that you yourself get from the food you eat, so you may want to keep a simple diet for a few months. Avoid too many fats or sweets. And don’t forget to get lots of rest, which will help with the quality and quantity of milk production.

  6. Enjoy it!

These first months with your baby will never be repeated. That bond is incredibly special, and having baby so close to you is something you’ll never forget. So our best advice is to enjoy it! Soak up the moment–talking, singing, telling stories to your baby. It is sure to be a magical time that you will cherish for the rest of your life. We always recommend talking with your doctor about any concerns you have related to breastfeeding.
